This Battle of Waterloo chess set is hand painted in pewter and brass and comes packed in individual boxes and foam protection for each color. The Battle of Waterloo took place at the village of Waterloo, near Brussels Belgium on the 18th June 1815. The combatants were the British with their allies, the Germans, Dutch, Belgians, and Prussians. The Duke of Wellington was in command against The French ''Grande Armee'' commanded by Napoleon. The Allied army had 67.000 troops against the French with 74.000. Napoleon lost the battle which decided his fate and ended his reign. History shows that he very near won. This Set depicts the Duke and Duchess of Wellington, flanked by a Life Guard and Scotts Grey officer as bishops. Napoleon and Josephine are flanked by an Old Guard and Chasseur officer as Bishops. Cavalry riders are the Knights and Cannons are rooks showing regimental [printed] flags. Pawns are well detailed soldiers on both sides. The bottoms are felted. Kings are 4.75 in height with a base of 1.375. This set is suitable for a 15 inch board with 1.75 inch squares. Chess board is not included. All pieces were cast in Hydrostone (a trademark of the United States Gypsum Corporation), a reconstituted stone material used by sculptors. The pieces were hand-painted to resemble aged ivory, given several coats of acrylic varnish, and then coated with a museum-grade paste wax to enhance their appearance and feel.
